Uppsala University hereby declares the following position that will be open for application: PhD position in experimental nuclear physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Start date: spring 2012.

Research areas: applied physics of nuclear

Project: Nuclear Reaction http://www.physics.uu.se/tk/en/content/nuclear-reaction-research-group Group is looking for PhD students in the field of nuclear data research, in particular neutron induced nuclear reactions. This group is part of applied nuclear physics division at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. We're building a neutron source for IGISOL facility at the University of Jyväskylä, for precision measurements of fission.

PhD students will participate in the planning and conduct measurements on IGISOL campaign. Neutron source will be installed during 2012. It will then be used for precision measurements of the isotopes of neutron-induced fission for various actinides with IGISOL and JYFLTRAP. Measured data will be used to improve the model code for nuclear fission process.

Work will be performed from Sweden with some travel to Finland. Candidates will be involved in practical work in laboratories, conduct data analysis and computer simulations, and participate in the development of the model.

We are looking for candidates, excellent highly motivated with a good knowledge of nuclear physics. The candidate should have an interest in the development of innovative experimental methods and data analysis tools.

Qualifications: A master's degree or similar that must be completed no later than January 2012. Good grades from undergraduate programs who have contributed. Proficiency in both spoken and written English and ability to work both independently and in groups who have contributed.

Your application must contain a statement of research interests, CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of your Master's thesis (or a draft thereof), published articles or other relevant material (if applicable) to the address below. Name of person who can be contacted for references and / or letter (s) recommendations should be included.

PhD position is funded for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including department duties at least 20% (typically teaching). More information: http://www.fysast.uu.se.
