Research Position at Medical Engineering Centre at King’s College London, UK
description
The role of this post will be to drive the collection and analysis of perfusion image data sets, further develop and run mechanical and live phantoms for calibrating image analysis and develop novel engineering instrumentation for data acquisition. The aim of this post is to develop imaging and engineering technologies and protocols for cardiac perfusion that will be coupled to computational models that in turn have the capacity to integrate multiple data types into personalised and bio-physically consistent mathematical models. The post holder should have experience processing large image data sets, developing instrumentation (preferably on a micro-mechanical scale) and measurement rigs with medical imaging with high performance computing and/or computational modelling. This post is part of a large programme grant involving multiple imaging modalities, disciplines (maths, physics, medicine, biology) thus the candidate should also have the personal qualities required to work in such an environment.
Central to measuring cardiac perfusion with magnetic resonance imaging is the injection of contrast agent whose advection and diffusive transport over multiple heartbeats provides a spatial-temporal metric of perfusion. While imaging of this contrast agent can be performed with remarkable precision, determining best practice acquisition protocols for specific patient groups remains problematic. Specifically the need to maintain (1) an acquisition duration per heartbeat which reduces motion artefacts and (2) a spatial resolution which unambiguously identifies spatial abnormalities in perfusion, require a fine tuned balance between a large variety of parameters. Furthermore, in addition to the fundamental limitations imposed by the physics of the measurement process, the pharmaco-kinetics of the contrast agent and the specific pathophysiology of the individual further confound identification of an optimal imaging strategy.
