The Fellows program honors Dr. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo Smith, senior economist and co-founder Indonesia USINDO, who died in 2001. An architect of the modern economy of Indonesia, Professor Smith led the faculty of economics at the University of Indonesia, and later became minister of trade and minister of state for research.
Professor Smith is also the driving force behind the program in the 1950s from the Ford Foundation which sent Indonesian economists to the U.S. for advanced degrees. Many attended the University of California at Berkeley and the group became known as the "Berkeley Mafia" when its members assumed key cabinet in the next decade.
One Fellowship is available to United States citizens / permanent residents for research related to the political economy of Indonesia. Another fellowship is available to Indonesian citizens with projects relating to the Indonesia-United States relations.
Smith Fellows Program Application 2012
USINDO is pleased to announce a call for applications for 2012 Fellows Program Sumitro.
The Smith Fellows Program is a travel grant / study $ 10,000 for post-doctoral scholars, PhD candidates, senior academics, and candidates declared qualified professionals to engage in field research. One Fellowship is available to U.S. citizens resident / permanent for research related to the political economy of Indonesia. One Fellowship is also available to Indonesian citizens with projects relating to the Indonesia-United States relations.
Eligibility Requirements
Smith Fellowship applicants must be American to United States citizens or permanent residents in the United States with a specific project on Indonesia's political economy. Applications outside the scope of economics or political economy will not be considered.
Indonesia Applicants for Fellowship must be Indonesian citizens Sumitro with specific projects on every aspect of Indonesian-US bilateral relations. Applications related strictly to American topics, or non-US / non-Asian theme will not be considered.
Language Proficiency: Please note that although not required, previous studies Indonesian is helpful in conducting field research. American applicants must indicate on the application form if and at what level languages have been studied, both formally and informally. Indonesian applicants must be able to further study in English. Proof of English proficiency can be demonstrated by a TOEFL score. Indonesia who have graduated from U.S. institutions of higher education, or from the institution in an English speaking country, exempt from this requirement.
Applicants / scholars who intend to publish their work in some form will improve their applications. Previous trips to, and experience in, Indonesia or the United States is desirable but not necessary.
Notifications: USINDO will notify the selected 2012 Smith Fellow (s) by February 15, 2012. USINDO will not award any scholarships in a given year if no qualified applicants, a single opinion USINDO.

All of the following must be completed and received on or before January 15, 2012, in order to be considered for Smith Fellows Program:
* Application Form: Please send the completed and signed registration form.
* Field Research Abstract: Please provide an abstract 4:59 single spaced pages of your intended research.
* Curriculum Vitae or Resume: Please send curriculum vitae (not exceeding 10 pages) or continue to provide full citations of all publications, with the items most recently published listed first.
Letter of Recommendation *: Two (2) letters of recommendation are required. One letter of recommendation should be from the dissertation advisor, senior lecturer, or other comparable advisor. Please reference you to send a letter of recommendation directly to sumitro@usindo.org on or before January 15, 2012. Applicants have the responsibility to request and remind them to direct their referees to send letters of recommendation by the deadline required.

* Additional Information: In addition to the above information, review committee will consider additional information such as writing samples, course syllabi, etc. and lecturer at the Faculty members are welcome to submit a course syllabus which does not exceed five pages.
