LRI PhD Programme and PhD positions 2012 at University College London
Overview
We are looking for talented and motivated recent graduates or final year undergraduates, with backgrounds in biological sciences, physics, chemistry, maths and computing, who have decided that they want to do a PhD and:
have or expect to gain a first/upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject;
have laboratory or research experience (either as part of or outside of a university degree course);
are able to satisfy the English language requirements of University College London, where our students are registered (see FAQs).
How to submit an application
You must register online before you can fill in the application form. Registering will also allow you to save and resume your application. You will be asked to provide a valid email address - please type this in carefully as your email address will be your login username.
Please make sure that your email address is the one that you will check regularly throughout the application process as this will be our main way of contacting you.
Use the Apply Now button at the end of these instructions to commence registration.
Completing the application form
The online application form has 7 sections; all fields marked with an asterisk * are compulsory.
The information you provide on your education, skills and experience plus the information given by your referees will be the only facts used in deciding whether you will be invited to interview.
Once you have completed Section 1, you can save your progress so you can return to and complete the form at a later date.
When you are logged into the system, you will be automatically logged out after 20 minutes of inactivity and you will lose any unsaved information entered into the current section. If you are going to stop working on the form, please use the `Save` button before logging out, then log in at a later time to complete your application.
The deadline for applications to the 2012 LRI PhD programme is 12.00 midnight (GMT) on Thursday 17 November 2011, when the online application site will close. However, you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible, to allow sufficient time for your referees to supply their references.
Please remember to print and / or save this page as a PDF for your records before pressing the submit button.
Completing "Section 1 - Personal Details"
Fill in your name in the correct format, capitalising the appropriate letters (e.g. Joe Bloggs instead of joe bloggs), as this will be used in all future correspondence with yourself and your named referees.
Completing "Section 2 - Group Leader Choice"
You are applying to the LRI PhD Programme and we ask for information on your preferred group leaders on the application form. However, if you are invited to interview, you will have the opportunity to change your group leader preferences, as you hear more about the different labs and projects. You can select group leaders at our Clare Hall (CH) laboratories, at our Lincoln`s Inn Fields (LIF) laboratories, or at both laboratories - please see FAQs for information on what happens if you are interested in group leaders at both sites.
Before completing the application form, please read PhD Projects 2012 for information about the Group Leaders recruiting PhD students to start in September 2012 and their PhD projects.
When you complete the application form:
you will be asked to select the 3 group leaders that you are most interested in doing a PhD with (non-ranked list);
you will be asked to indicate if you are particularly interested in one of these 3 group leaders (your first choice at time of application);
you will be asked to indicate if you also are interested in doing a PhD with any of our other group leaders (non-ranked list, up to 3).
Completing "Section 3 – Education and Lab Experience"
Please complete carefully, giving as much information as possible. Pay particular attention to the section on your research lab experience. In the section on your courses/modules taken, please state each course/module with credits and marks in order to give us as complete information as possible.
Completing "Section 4 - Research and Career Aspirations and CV Upload"
Please pay particular attention to this section and tell us why you want to do a PhD and are applying to the LRI PhD Programme. You will be asked to upload a copy of your CV - this must be a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) or a Rich Text file (.rtf) that is no larger than 2MB.
Completing "Section 5 - Other Details"
This section is to provide additional information about yourself and to help us advertise our PhD programme in the future.
Completing "Section 6 - References"
We will request references from 2 or 3 scientists who are familiar with your academic work and/or laboratory research experience and who can judge your potential as a PhD student.
Please select your referees carefully: one must be your current or most recent employer/supervisor, at least one must be able to comment on your University academic record, and at least one must be able to comment on your previous lab experience.
Please ensure that your referees` contact details, especially their email addresses, are accurate and enter only one email address per referee. We will contact your referees by email upon application submission asking them to complete an online reference form. The deadline for reference receipt is 12.00 noon (GMT) Thursday 24 November 2011 - if we do not receive at least 2 references for you by then, your application will not be considered.
Please help your referees meet this deadline by informing them of your application, and encouraging them to submit their reference soon after receipt of our email. You and your referee will receive an acknowledgement email once each reference has been submitted.
Completing "Section 7 – Review Application"
Please review your application carefully and complete any missing fields. Once all the mandatory fields are completed, the submit button will appear at the bottom of the screen.
Please remember to print and / or save this page as a PDF for your records before pressing the Submit button.
