International Doctoral Scholarships in Informatics, Kyoto University, Japan - DOCTORAL PROGRAMS INTERNATIONAL INFORMATICS
GRADUATE SCHOOL INFORMATION
KYOTO UNIVERSITY 2012

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) offers scholarships for Ph.D. 2012 Of course, recognizes students who wish to engage in research on Information Technology, especially in English, at the Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University.

1. COURSE AND NUMBER OF REGISTRATION
(1) Program
Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, consists of the following departments:

Intelligence Science and Technology
Social Informatics
Applied Analysis and Complex Dynamical Systems
Applied Mathematics and Physics
Systems Science
Communications and Computer Engineering

Applicants must choose one of the above as their major field when applying for this program.

(2) The number of applicants to be accepted
Eight successful applicants will be acknowledged.

2. In REQUIREMENTS FOR DETAILS
(1) Requirements: Applicants must be from a country with which Japan has formal diplomatic relations, and must be currently studying / working outside of Japan. They are currently living in Japan are not eligible for this program.
(2) Age: Applicants must be under 35 years old on April 1, 2012.
(3) Academic Qualifications: Applicant must meet one of the following conditions by the end of September 2012.
i. Holds a master's level.
ii. Have completed 16 years of school education in a foreign country and then spend at least two years doing research at university facilities, research institutions, or other such, and acknowledged through research achievements have scholastic ability equivalent to or higher than that of someone who has completed a master's degree in a graduate school in Japan.
iii. Recognized by the school, based on the screening of individual applications, scholastic ability equivalent to or higher than those with a master's degree, and at least 24 years.

(4) Recommendations
Each applicant must be formally recommended to the president of Kyoto University by the university president or dean of the school faculty / graduate from the university where the applicant has graduated. Said the university must meet the conditions mentioned in (3). In addition, any applicant who is currently working must submit an official letter of recommendation written by the head of the employing organization.

(5) physical and mental health
Applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to do research at Kyoto University.

(6) language ability
Applicants must be competent in English.

(7) Other conditions
i. Each student must recognize arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 7, 2012.
ii. Any applicant who is affiliated to the military entities at the end of March 2012 are not eligible.
iii. Any applicant who receives money from the scholarship / government, or from other foundations, will not be accepted.

3. DETAILS of Scholarships
(1) salary:
Approximately ¥ 156,000 per month. It will be given for a maximum of 36 months, but will not be paid in case of an extended leave of absence from academia.
(2) The cost of travel:
i. To Japan
An economy class airfare between the international airport closest to the home addresses of students admitted and the Kansai International Airport will be provided.
ii. From Japan
An economy class air ticket back home from Japan will be offered on condition that the student admitted that he would leave Japan in the last month of scholarship payment.

(3) School Fees:
Entrance and tuition fees will be waived.

4. SELECTION AND REGISTRATION
(1) selection of phase 1
Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, examined the documents submitted and makes the initial selection. Those selected recommended to the Government of Japan for the selection phase 2. The results of this selection will be communicated to applicants by the end of April 2012.

(2) selection phase 2
The Japanese government examine the application recommended by the University of Kyoto and decides the final candidates for Scholarship (Monbukagakusho) The Government of Japan. Applicants will be notified of final decision in late August, 2012. Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, will send a certificate of successful applicants get into today.

5. DOCUMENTS FOR 1ST AND 2ND PHASE SELECTION
The following documents must arrive on or before January 6, 2012 in
School Affairs Division
Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University
Yoshida-Honmachi, Sakyo-ku
Kyoto 606-8501 Japan.

(1) Application Form.
(2) Application of Japan (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship Government.
(3) Health Certificate issued on or after October 1, 2011.
(4) A copy of the official family register or equivalent document showing nationality. (Perhaps copies of passport applicants).
(5) Copy of Bachelor's and Master's degree certificate, diploma or equivalent certificate, showing the expected date of graduation.
(6) Official undergraduate and graduate academic records / transcripts.
(7) Letter of Recommendation written by the dean of graduate school applicants, addressed to the president of Kyoto University.
(8) Recommendation letter written by the supervisor of the applicant's undergraduate or graduate, or equivalent standing.
(9) If an applicant is currently employed: letter of recommendation written by the head of the employing organization.
(10) Research plan at Kyoto University activities (3 pages or less, the size of A4).
(11) Name of prospective mentors at the University of Kyoto, the applicant contacted through his / her superior.
(12) List of scientific publications.
(13) A brief explanation of academic achievement (3 pages or less, the size of A4).
(14) Copy of Master's Thesis (or equivalent). If this thesis is not in English, a translation or summary shall be prepared in English and attached.
(15) Copy of the applicant's TOEFL or TOEIC score or equivalent to demonstrate English proficiency of applicants. (See Note 6 (6) below)
All of the above documents, except a copy of the applicant's Master Thesis, must be in English.
These documents will not be returned to the applicant.

6. NOTES
(1) Before applying, applicants should contact their prospective supervisor at the University of Kyoto through introduction by their supervisor at the home university if there is something not clear about the qualifications for application for this program, applicants must consult with the Division of School Affairs (See 7. CONTACT INFORMATION bottom).
(2) Application for Japan (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship Government may not be submitted to academic institutions / research some.
(3) Registration may be revoked if the application is found to include false information.
(4) Scholarships may be canceled if:
i. There has been a breach of promise to the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho).
ii. Students have been subject to disciplinary action, or is deemed unproductive.

(5) Applicants are asked to read and understand Japanese customs, climate and general life. In addition, although the research activities conducted in English, basic Japanese to be learned for the day-to-day interactions.
(6) Applicants are expected to submit the TOEFL or TOEIC scores if available. If the English proficiency of documents showing the applicant (such as TOEFL or TOEIC) can not be filed, English language skills will be evaluated through the interview, the British publication the paper written by the applicant, etc.
