Nieman Fellowships in Global Health Reporting, Harvard University, USA - Nieman Foundation will award two scholarships for 2012-2013: one for the journalists from the United States and one for non-US citizens. During their Nieman year, fellow Global Health will be part of the Nieman Class of 2013 and will participate in weekly activities at the Nieman Foundation. They will have the opportunity to study at the Harvard School of Public Health and will have access to faculty and programs at the university through the Initiative for Global Health at Harvard.
At the end of their year at Harvard, fellow global health reporting will begin three-four months of journalistic field work in developing countries. This field is intended to provide an intensive learning experience and reporting in countries where the most urgent problems in global health existed. At the end of the field, the fellow will be expected to produce a body of work that may include a story for publication, a case study that focuses on complex issues in global health journalism or a handbook of best practices related to reporting on the health of nation building.
Who is eligible TO FELLOWSHIP IN GLOBAL HEALTH REPORTING Nieman?
Candidates nominate themselves by submitting an application and supporting materials. There is no age limit and no educational prerequisites for Nieman Fellowship in Global Health Reporting.

You must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English.
You must have five or more years of full-time or freelance professional journalism experience in news media. The work you do as a student or for a nongovernmental organization or government will not count toward fulfilling this requirement.
Professional experience you have with the news or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio or television stations or networks, online publications or public interest magazines. We will not consider candidates from public relations or organizations that do not produce a general interest news.
Your employer must give you leave for the academic year at Harvard and three to four months of field work experience, a total of 13-14 months. Your employer should also state the purpose of your news organization to use, as much as practical, skills and knowledge in global health coverage when you return to work.
WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY?
All your application materials, including letters of recommendation, should be sent to the address at the bottom of this page and must be postmarked on or before January 31, 2012.
Nieman Foundation can not pay customs fees or other delivery costs for your application materials. You can avoid these costs by using the online application. If you are mailing your application from outside the United States, please consider the length of time it takes mail from your country to reach the U.S.

SAMPLE WORK WHAT SHOULD I SEND WITH MY APPLICATION?
Send a sample that best reflects your interests and abilities. Your sample should have been published or broadcast between January 1, 2011 and January 31, 2012. You can send a sample of before January 1, 2011, as a replacement for one sample is required. (Note exception below for a documentary filmmaker.) If you routinely work in more than one medium, you can send a sample of each as long as you follow the instructions below.
If a sample of your work is not in English, please include a summary of their contents in English. Your statement must also support and synopsis in English.
All samples were printed, synopsis and summary must be formatted to fit the 8 1 / 2 "x 11" (21.5 x 28 cm) sheet of paper. Write your name at the top right corner of each item you send them (or at the back of the photo). Do not send complete newspapers or magazines, books, scrapbooks, unpublished manuscripts, work-in process, irreplaceable materials, complex presentations (eg, spiral binding or report covers) or "creative" as a video presentation showing still photos. We will not accept jobs that do not meet these criteria.
Please clearly date all your samples and send no more than the amount requested. We can not return any material submitted, so make copies of everything you send.
Broadcast Journalist (Note: If in English, send a DVD / CD total of 30 minutes with a synopsis)
Radio and Television: Submit a written synopsis of the five stories that represent your work with a brief description of your involvement in every story - for example, producing and editing.
Documentary: Send a written synopsis of your work samples and a brief description of your involvement with the work - for example, write the script and directing. Your sample should have been broadcast or shown in public places in the last two years.
Print Journalist
Authors: Submit samples of five different works published. (Each byline counts as one sample.) If you submit a story of the series, including a brief description of the other stories in the series.
Editor: Submit a statement describing your work. (This is in addition to two of your essay.) You can include a copy of the work published along with a description of your role in the sample. For published works, follow the instructions for authors.
Photographers: Submit a portfolio with eight samples of your work: original prints, tear sheets or a combination of both. Photos must be 8 "x 10" (20.5 x 25.5 cm) and can be black and white or color. Do not mount your photos.
Online Journalists: Send samples equivalent to five articles printed or 30 minutes of programming, along with a statement describing your work, your involvement with each sample and whether each one created for the Web or adapted from other media formats. (Your statement in addition to two of your essay.) Samples You need to journalistic in nature and show that your work involves news gathering, writing, editing or producing.
WHAT TO INCLUDE MY APPLICATION?
Write your name at the top right corner of all the items that you submit as part of your application.
Complete, date and sign pages 6 through 9 of the application form.
Include examples of work as described on page 3 of this application.
Write two essays:
One statement of 1,000 words or less describing your career plans of journalistic experience, and aspirations
A proposal to study at Harvard of 1,000 words or less. Include in the proposal are your ideas for subjects or areas of concentration in global health and how you anticipate using your journalistic work in the knowledge you acquired during your Nieman year and practicum fourmonth. You do not need to list specific course title and you also do not have to submit a plan for field research phase of the fellowship. Global Health Fellow reporting will develop their plans during the Nieman year with guidance from the Nieman Foundation.
This essay is important for your application. The selection committee will evaluate them carefully to understand your achievements, your potential and your commitment to global health cover. We are very interested in examples and details that show you have a significant capacity for growth and leadership as a journalist. We also want to know specifically how one academic year at Harvard and four months of field work in developing countries will enhance your work as a journalist covering global health.
We also require four confidential letter of recommendation:
Two of the people familiar with your work who can comment on journalistic abilities and your potential.
One of your immediate supervisor to comment on your qualifications for this fellowship.
One of your organization's news publisher, editor, manager or director supporting your application and give you a 14-month leave of absence if you are not awarded a scholarship. Please tell the person who wrote this letter that must include an expression of intent to use, as much as practical, skills and knowledge you develop in covering global health issues when you return to work.
Freelance journalist must have four people familiar with the letter writing they are working.
Please ask the person who wrote to tell us specifically how your skills and experience make you an exceptional candidate for the Nieman Fellowship in Global Health Reporting. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the Nieman Foundation at the address at bottom of page 2 in time to receive a postmark on or before January 31, 2012.
Nieman Fellows SUPPORT FOR FINANCIAL REPORTING IN GLOBAL HEALTH
Nieman Fellows in Global Health Reporting will receive an allowance up to $ 78,000 over a period of 13 months (less if the field is only 3 months), September 2012 to September 2013, at $ 6,000 per month. First nine months will be spent studying at Harvard and three to four months will be spent doing field work in developing countries. During the nine month period at Harvard, the family are invited to participate and housing allowances and child care will be given supplements. Cost to attend classes at Harvard are also covered for colleagues and affiliates.
