Disaster Management and Food Security in the Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowships
Disaster Management and Food Security in Journalism Fellowships program sponsored by the Asia Pacific Center for Global Partnership. The new 14-day dialogue professional, study and travel program is designed to work 12 broadcast, print and online journalists from the United States, Japan, China and the countries of Asia and the Pacific Ocean adjacent to plate tectonics. It will introduce journalists to participate in disaster management activities in the United States and Japan as well as post-disaster challenges to the political security, economy and energy. Emphasis will be placed on:

disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery efforts at the local, federal and international levels;
government, military, business and civil society managed to reduce risk and in providing post-disaster relief initiatives;
resilience to recover from the disaster and the maintenance of the political structure of the market economy, energy policy and the functioning of communities after disasters;
the impact of natural disasters recently in the market and economic disaster supply chains across the Asia Pacific region;
response to the Fukushima nuclear crisis and the future of energy policy and security in the Asia Pacific region.

Study Tour Destinations: San Francisco, California, Honolulu, Hawaii, Tokyo, Japan, Sendai, Japan

Who Can Apply: Mid-career journalists with at least seven years experience in journalism. Media professionals from print, broadcast and online news organizations, including journalists, writers, editors, producers, columnists, bloggers and editorial writers can apply. Participating journalists will cover the four Japanese, four Americans, and four journalists from China and Asia and Oceanic countries bordering the Pacific tectonic plate. Countries including Fiji, Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Taiwan, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Journalists who specialize in topics related to specific themes are preferred. Fluency in English is required.

The program is intended for air transportation, lodging, and program-related ground transportation and meals for participating journalists.

Given the recent Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami and the nuclear crisis, there has been a rethinking of how government and communities prepare for and respond to disasters. Disaster management requires cooperation between the two varieties of a range of stakeholders in affected countries, and between the international community, to preserve and maintain the resilience of the political structure, market economy and energy policy. In response, East-West Center is pleased to announce a new Disaster Management and Food Security in the Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowship program.

2012, Disaster and Security Management Journalism Fellowship Program will introduce journalists to participate in disaster management activities in the United States and Japan as well as post-disaster challenges to the political security, economy and energy. In San Francisco, journalists will examine the lessons from the Loma Prieta earthquake that struck the San Francisco Bay Area of ​​California on October 17, 1989 and measured 6.9 on the Richter scale. In addition, California, particularly San Francisco area, is considered a leading example of the U.S. disaster management and development of renewable energy. Honolulu, meanwhile, will provide reporters with a greater understanding of regional disaster prevention and mitigation and will include additional examples of alternative power generation. In Japan, the journalists will visit the capital for an assessment of how the government and Japan's disaster-response agency handled Eastern Earthquake of Japan and the resulting tsunami and the nuclear crisis, and what lessons are learned. In addition, the journalists will examine nuclear power and energy policy in Japan from various perspectives. In Sendai, the East-West Center will expose journalists to the personal side of natural disasters through discussions with students, aid workers and community members. In both the United States and Japan, the role and responsibility of media to accurately report the disaster will be explored.

NOTE - EWC requires journalists to participate to submit at least one story or a series of blog and / or tweets that result from their participation in the alliance.

Letter of recommendation from your immediate supervisor describing your suitability for this program and how news organizations hoping to benefit from your participation.
Two references from outside your organization employs
