The appointee, who will be based at the Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra, will conduct a research project on the water quality and freshwater ecological responses associated with climate change. The appointee will develop Bayesian network models to link projected water quality and quantity changes with ecosystem changes with a particular focus on the probability of adverse biological effects. The focus of the study is the Upper Murrumbidgee River Catchment in Australia, but it is expected that the models developed will be transferable to other regions.

The appointee will be responsible for the collation of knowledge of the relationships between environmental conditions and freshwater ecological response and constructing and testing Bayesian network models. This knowledge will come from a combination of local studies, strategically collected data, expert knowledge and published studies. The appointee will collaborate with partner agencies to link ecological response models with models of water quality and quantity changes. In addition, the appointee will use the model outputs to inform adaptation initiatives for water security and freshwater biodiversity.
