European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE), Erasmus Mundus, Italy - European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE) is a program of excellence sponsored by the European Commission under the Erasmus Mundus scheme. It offers the unique opportunity to study Law and Economics at the phd-in (at least) three different countries. This program prepares economists and lawyers of high promise for an academic career in the growing field of critical research or for responsible positions in government, research organizations and international consulting group.

Importance of Law and Economics in the modern legal scholarship continues to grow. Currently, the Law and Economics has become an important part of the curriculum in most American law schools and many European law. However, in Europe, there is, until now, it is clear the lack of a structured program in the economic analysis of law at the doctoral level.

The European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE) is designed to fill that gap. Three of the leading European universities in the field of Law and Economics, University of Bologna, Hamburg and Rotterdam, with the collaboration of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research Mumbai, has established a joint doctoral program is primarily designed to provide doctoral students with a systematic and methodical training in economic analysis of law.

Who Can Apply?
Admission to the program is open to applicants with a diploma or bachelor's degree and master's degree in law or economics, or a comparable university degree (second cycle qualification) is required by the university partners to get into doctoral studies.

EDLE is a structured program in the economic analysis of law at the doctoral level. Therefore, before a thorough knowledge in law and economics are required, as well as basic knowledge of microeconomics and calculus. If you do not have any special knowledge on the economic analysis of law, you should consider implementing EMLE program, in which this knowledge can be obtained.

Scholarship
Depending on approval from the European Commission, for the 2011-2012 academic year, scholarships are offered the following:

9 scholarship by the European Commission under the Erasmus Mundus scheme (5 to Category A applicants, an applicant for the Western Balkans, 3 for Category B applicants),
6 by the partner universities (University of Bologna, Hamburg Institute of Law and Economics, Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics).
Additional scholarships may be available at a later stage.

Category A Mundus scholarships are provided to applicants who: i) does not come from the countries' EU-regions "(European Union member states, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland), and ii) non-residents also do not perform their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for a period equal to or more than a total of 12 months over the last five years on "The EU-region" state. This rule does not apply to non "EU-regions" of candidates who have previously received a scholarship to follow the Erasmus Mundus Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses.

Western Balkan applicants (from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia) applies to a specific position, under the same conditions Cat. An applicant.

Category B Mundus scholarships are provided to applicants who do not meet the criteria for Category A is defined above.

Mundus scholarship contributed 33,600 Euros gross per annum, for 3 years. It is about the size of a net income of Euro 1,600 per month.

On top of monthly salary, benefits Mundus scholar of regular contributions to the installation, travel and other types of costs to a maximum of 7500 Euro (Cat. A) or Euro 3,000 (Cat B).

Applicants for Mundus scholarship can only be valid for a maximum of 3 courses throughout Mundus (Master or Doctorate).

Mundus scholarship recipients will enter full-time employment contract with the University of Bologna. Individuals who have benefited from Mundus doctoral scholarship (EMJD) are not eligible for a second grant. Mundus scholar can not benefit from other Community grants while carrying out their doctoral activities.

Scholarships offered by Erasmus University of Rotterdam provides gross income around. 25,000 Euros per year, for 4 years (net income of about 1,400 Euros per month) offered by the University of Bologna approx. Euro 13,638.47 (gross) per year for 3 years (net income of approximately Euro 1,038.61), with an additional 50% increase for the period of study spent abroad (up to 18 months total). Scholarships offered by the University of Hamburg amounted to approx. 13,200 euros per year for 3 years (net number of 930 euros per month net of insurance).

Scholarships of various types will be given according to merit and in accordance with the regulations Mundus.

Tuition
For college Academic Year 2011/2012 the total cost to 3600 Euros per year. Scholarship listed above also covers the cost of tuition.

Application
Applications submitted online and must include the following documents:

CV with information about academic education, professional and others (Europass model),
official transcripts of previous degree (in English),
two letters of reference,
letter of motivation with prospective research proposals and,
English language proficiency certificate (FCE, CAE, CPE, BEC, the British Chamber of Commerce, Trinity College, TOEFL, IELTS) in case the applicant is a native language is not English. Applicants who have attended, for a minimum period of 6 months, for university courses held in English do not need to submit the certificate,
academic work, if available (at most two papers),
copy of valid ID.
The deadline for applications is: January 9, 2012 (CET) for all applicants. Applications can be submitted online only.

Recognition
Applicants will be selected based on their academic achievements and their ability to perform high-level scientific research activities in the field of economic analysis of law, and in accordance with the regulations Mundus. A good knowledge of English is a prerequisite.

In order to obtain additional information, the Commission on Elections may interview selected applicants. The consortium following the entry of non-discrimination policy.

Mundus Category A applicants who fail to obtain Mundus scholarship will be considered for other scholarships offered by the consortium.
