Simons Graduate Fellowships in Theoretical Computer Science, USA

Simons Foundation Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences invites applications for Graduate Scholarship Simons in Theoretical Computer Science program. Simons Graduate Fellows are graduate students with an exceptional track record of research achievement.

Rationale: Theoretical Computer Science is unique because graduate students are working independently stars produce some of the best in the field. After two or three years, one can identify many of the stars appear in the field. The Simons prestigious Postgraduate Scholarships will identify and support the star. This Fellowship will allow students like further collaboration with peers and more senior researchers.

Funding Levels and Older: A Simons Graduate Fellowship awarded for a period of two years. A scholarship recipient must be a graduate student during the Fellowship. Each award will provide annual support as follows:

Fellowship salary as determined by the student body.
Student tuition fees at the institution, to an extent previously covered by other outside funding.
$ 3,000 in additional support for students to use in his / her discretion.
$ 5,000 per year to the student health insurance and other benefits.
$ 5,000 per year for travel, books, computers and other equipment.
$ 5,000 allowance for institutional overhead costs.

Fellowship will begin September 1, 2012, and ending August 31, 2014.

Expenses are allowed: travel funds may be used for purposes of further research and professional development of students, for example in the presence of domestic and international conferences in the areas of research students. Travel expenses may include travel costs directly (economy class) and the related cost per diem at the standard government rate. The use of travel funds must be approved by the advisory Fellows'.

Allowed the purchase of personal computers (up to $ 2,000) only during the first year of the award.

Unused funds: Any funds not spent in one year of the grant can be spent in subsequent years without the approval, but unspent funds at the end of the Fellowship must be returned to the foundation unless express permission is obtained for future use is determined.

Reporting: The annual activity report briefly summarizes the research results achieved, talks given and the necessary papers from the Graduate Fellow, for 60 days after the end of each year Fellowship. Activity report must be signed by the student advisor. In addition, the annual financial statements required from the Department, signed by institutional officials.

Scholarship recipients will be given access to proposalCENTRAL for submission of annual reports and other documents for the foundation. Payment will be delayed if the annual report is not received within 30 days after the due date.

His fellow graduates are expected to attend the annual meeting of the Simons Foundation, the foundation costs.

Basic Award: The purpose of this program is to support graduate students who have produced outstanding results. A selection committee of distinguished scientists will consider the application. The award will be based on the quality of the applicant's research contributions, as outlined in the Research Report, and the strength of a letter of support.

Requirements: To be eligible applicants must be Ph.D. students at a U.S. institution of higher education. A track record of outstanding results in theoretical computer science is a key criterion. There is a limit of one application per university. Please coordinate with the Department Chair.

There are no citizenship requirements. Nonprofit organizations may not apply.

Number of Awards: Top Ten Graduate Fellows steady state, implying about five new awards per year.

Research statement (two page limit): A statement summarizing the applicant's research contributions, researchers are planning for the immediate future, and career goals. These references do not need to be included in the page limit, but shall not exceed an additional page.
A curriculum vitae (two page limit), which includes institutions, advisors, and a list of publications.
A letter of support from the Department Chair.
A letter of support from the student advisor.
Letters of reference outside the student body. This letter must be submitted directly through proposalCENTRAL by reference. Please see the Application Instructions for more information.
Thesis topic.

Funding decisions will be announced by August 1, 2012, and funding will begin on September 1, 2012.
