Aida Sulayman Arif Bursary in Art and Archaeology, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK
Art and Archaeology Department is pleased to invite applications for this scholarship, created in recognition of the work of Dr. Aida Sulaiman Arif, a prominent archaeologist who completed her PhD at SOAS in 1960.
Throughout a long and distinguished career, Dr. Arif serve a number of different scholarships, lectureships, visiting professorships and associate professorships at several seats at the world's most prestigious learning. Teaching and research took him to places as far away as the University of Khartoum (Sudan), University of Jordan, McGill University (Canada), King Saud University (Saudi Arabia) and Harvard University, Boston (United States). He participated in many archaeological excavations and has many publications to his name.
Many students are Dr Arif went on to hold key positions in the Department of Antiquities in Jordan and neighboring Arab countries. He retired in 1991. (Dr Arif is the widow of Ahmad Mustafa Abu an-Hakima - author of "Modern History of Kuwait - and fellow alumnus Ahmad Mustafa Abu Hakima SOAS Bursary at SOAS has been named after him.).
To celebrate the invaluable contribution of Dr. Arif in art, archeology and heritage, this scholarship has been created to help last year PhD student of Art and Archaeology at SOAS fund the completion of his or her studies. The Bursary will be awarded £ 2,600 by installments at the beginning of the first half, the initial installment of £ 2,600 in the second half and the last bonus £ 800 which will be given on completion - as long as the holder of the award of his or her thesis is completed before the end of the academic year.
Eligible Program
PhD degree in the Department of Art and Archaelogy
N.B. Preference will be given to the students write their dissertations in the field of Art & Archaeology of the Near and Middle East. Art and Archaeology students from other regions and cultures will still be eligible to apply and may be given in such circumstances when the Bursary applications from candidates studying Art & Archaeology of the Near East and Central are not considered strong enough to get scholarships.
Criteria for Candidates
Applicants can be of any nationality and in need of scholarships to fund the completion of their thesis.
The scholarships for PhD students who will submit the thesis before the end of the academic session 2012/13. Students are expected to be awarded this scholarship will be enrolled in the Extended Writing up (continued) status during the academic session 2012/13. Extension Student Writing-up status are required to submit a thesis for examination within a maximum of three terms or within the time limit prescribed SOAS students (whichever is sooner).
Preference will be given to the students write their dissertations in the field of Art & Archaeology of the Near and Middle East. Prospective Assessment
Candidates will be judged primarily on the basis of academic achievement. Financial need will also be considered.
Selection will be made by the Advisory consisting of three members of the academic Department of Art & Archaeology: Head of department, research tutor and one other person appointed by the Chief.
Application Deadline
Applications must be received no later than 17:00 on 27 April 2012.
Late applications or incomplete will not be considered.
Notification of Results
All applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding the outcome of their application, usually in late June. The successful candidate will also be notified by mail. If you have not heard from us by the end of July, please contact the Scholarships Officer.
