PhD Stipends for Research on Global Biogeochemical Cycles, Germany -PhD honoraria for research on global biogeochemical cycles at the Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles International
International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles is located in Jena, Germany, offers scholarships to outstanding students interested in research on biogeochemical cycles in the Earth system. Schools provide excellent research possibilities for students to obtain a PhD degree in 3-year postgraduate program.
Key elements of life such as carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen continue to be exchanged between sea, land and atmosphere in what is known as global biogeochemical cycles. Research at the IMPRS-gBGC discover how the cycle functions, how they interrelate, and how they can change with climate or human activity. Students participate in ongoing research consisting of field observations, method development, experimentation, and modeling. Students also will benefit from a three-month research visit external, special programs such as statistics, Earth observation, modeling and analytical techniques, as well as in soft skills. Schools thus an excellent starting platform for a successful career in fields related to global biogeochemical cycles and Earth System Sciences.
Individual PhD projects dealing with various aspects of global biogeochemical cycles. Projects that are currently open for application:
Atmosphere & Ocean
- Carbon cycle study in northern Eurasia Zotino High Tower Observatory, central Siberia
- Spatial variability of the carbon cycle processes in permafrost landscapes
- Detailed analysis of high-latitude component of the carbon cycle flux
- Novel Theoretical Approach of global biogeochemical cycles
Biosphere Ecosystem &
- A million years of carbonate alteration and mobilization, modified by microbial activity
- Isotopes as tracers of terrestrial carbon cycle.
Data-driven modeling of global carbon and water cycles
- Carbon and water relations of the ecosystem to global scale
- Classification of Global Functional ecosystem biogeochemical behavior and biophysical
- Combining remote sensing and in situ data to improve biosphere models
- Evaluate the feasibility and consequences of greening the desert to meet future food and energy needs
- Data-based models to understand the biogeochemical cycle: Accounting for temporal autocorrelation
Land, land & soil microbiology hydrology
- Role of geogenic CO2 exhaust for the formation and stability of soil organic matter
- The interaction between polysaccharides and mineral surfaces
- High-latitude soil carbon dynamics modeling
Paleoclimate
- Transfer of environmental and climatic signals in volcanic lake sediments affected
- When long-term mobilization of carbonate in limestone aquifers, the project "Hydrogeochemistry"
We are accepting applications for a PhD scholarship until January 7, 2012.
